Well it is a Bunk House now. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282308 82282308 Entrance to Weathercote Cave Wainwright advised that you call at the house for the key to go down to the cave and waterfall. I discovered that the lady of the house was 100 years old so did not want to disturb her. (There is a story to tell about this lady which I will write in my report for the 2010 Challenge Book) https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282310 82282310 Weathercote Cave A limited view of the cave could be seen by reaching over the stone wall. AW pen and INk drawing showed a waterfall coming from the top of the cave. You can just see hear a small amount of water near the bottom. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282309 82282309 House near the Weathercote Cave House near the Weathercote Cave https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282311 82282311 another view of the house another view of the house https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282312 82282312 Lane to the back of the house and 'smaller' farm house I got my information from a visiting friend of the old lady of the house. So absorbed by it all I continued to walk up this path thinking it was the correct path. After coming to a dead end I was pointed off in the right direction. Which was the way I had come !!! https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282313 82282313 Jingle Pot Jingle Pot, not a very exciting pot hole to view https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282314 82282314 You come to the end of the wall. After following a well defind path AW advises a sharp right turn at the end of the wall. This is it. However, all is not as it was and you may wish to re route ! https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282315 82282315 St Leonards Church Chapel le Dale St Leonards Church Chapel le Dale. MY reroute took me past the church and then right up another lane to Hurtle Pot https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282316 82282316 Hurtle Pot Hurtle Pot can be seen from the road as can be seen here. A bit of a stretch and foot on wire fence to view. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282317 82282317 Hurtle Pot closer up This is a very impresive pot hole. With having Brosss with me I did not want to venture too close. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282318 82282318 another close up of Hurtle Pot As far as I get . Can you see the ropes in this and the last shot. There is a water pool down there. The pot is fenced off but accessable by a gate at the top on the lane. AW's route was blocked by locked gate. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282319 82282319 Onwards and upwards Climbing up the lane towards Gill Head house. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282320 82282320 Strange Statue Strange Statue https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282321 82282321 Explanation https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282322 82282322 A.W's route ? trespass When you get to Gill Head House AW advises a turn right and follow a flowerly dell to Ellerbeck. I decided on sticking to the farm track which was a ROW. Nothing on the map to indicate a path the way AW walked. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282323 82282323 Taking a breather. A bed of lime stone left of the farm trach to Ellerbeck https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282324 82282324 Approaching Ellerbeck Farm looking back at Ingleborough. The farmer you can see approaching was a real character and had plenty of time to chat. Learned alot from him and you too will learn if you buy the 2010 Challenge Book when published. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282325 82282325 Towards Ribblehead from Ellerbeck. The Hare and Hound Stone. The large indent being the Hare and the smaller the Hound. The full story will be in my report. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282327 82282327 The Hares escape stone This larger rock across the path you can see the indentations in the rock where the back legs of the Hare landed as he leaped on the stone. ( It must have been a very hot day! ) Funnily enough AW did not write about this ! https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282329 82282329 twinnies very interested in Bross. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282331 82282331 The bridle path from Ellerbeck https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282332 82282332 Bruntscar Farm The middle section of this walk follows a bridle path that continues to run close to the Brunt Scar formation. I WAS there! https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282543 82282543 Ribblehead Viaduct The only train I saw all day on the viaduct https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282544 82282544 Gatekirk The access to Gatekirk Cave was not accessable. Particularly with the dog. However, I took a path through a gate ( as can be seen in the photo top of shot) and chanced my arm by wandering out of my way to see if I could see anything. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282546 82282546 Gatekirk Cave Well struggling onto a fenced wall and leaning over I think I could just make out what may have been Gatekirk Cave. Impossible to tell as Aw's drawiing would have been close up and probably from a diffrent angle. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282547 82282547 Downstream The waterflowed down stream but then disappeared into a sink. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282548 82282548 Close up of sink AW does not mention this sink but does mention a Resurgence near Gatekirk Cave. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282549 82282549 River dries up River dries up https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282550 82282550 Resurgence This resurgence is further downstream from the Cave. Much further than I expected given what AW wrote. However, I tried to match the view I had with that of AW's drawing. He also would be at a lower level than me. Less water now but I feel it could well be one of the same https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282551 82282551 Riverbed path This leads to Philpin Lane close to end of the walk and the PUB. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282552 82282552 Dry river bed footpath Dry river bed footpath https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282553 82282553 The Hill Inn The Hill Inn https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282554 82282554 Drying out This is back of the Old School now a Bunk House. Kids just returning from Caving or pot holing drying out their gear. https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282556 82282556 getting closer getting closer to the HillEnd Inn was as about as good as it gets. As I approached the pub I could see two young lads outside the pub with Grime faces. I knew what that meant, the pub was closed. I cheered them up by giving them a lift to the Station Inn at Ribblehead, where I joined them for a pint ( or two ) https://raybradshaw.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=82282555 82282555
